Bengal Kitten from Foothill Felines - this is our Teacup as a young kitten!
Foothill Felines My Storm In A Teacup (AKA "Teeny")

Feel free to browse through this entire page; or, click on any of the following topics: Litter Registration;  Registering Your Individual Kitten;  What Do The Registration Numbers Mean?

Look Here!  LITTER REGISTRATION Look Here!

Usually, the breeder registers each litter of Bengals. There is a tan form for Litter Registration Application from T.I.C.A. (The International Cat Association), which the breeder then fills out with the information on the dam (mother) of each litter. If the same breeder owns the sire (father) of the litter, then the same breeder can complete the entire form. If the breeder has used an outside stud service, the owner of the stud must fill out the portion of the Litter Registration Form pertaining to the sire.

The owner of the dam is always considered to be the "breeder" of the litter. For both the sire and the dam, their breed, registered name, TICA registration number, and owner's name, address and signature is required.

Look Here!  REGISTERING YOUR INDIVIDUAL KITTEN Look Here!

When you purchase your pedigreed Bengal from your breeder, you should receive the kitten's "papers", which in TICA will be a blue slip showing the litter registration number of your kitten, along with the kitten's breed type, date of birth, registered name of the sire and registered name of the dam. The form will also list the name of the breeder and the number of living males and females born in the litter. You will have a place to select the name for your kitten, and also a second choice.

The breeder's cattery name may or may not be an automatic prefix to the kitten's name, depending upon how the breeder registered the litter. The total number of characters including any cattery names for the registered name of your kitten cannot exceed 35 letters/spaces/characters combined. You will need to fill out your name and address as the owner, and complete the section on your kitten including listing the sex, color and eye color of the kitten, as well as checking whether the kitten is long-haired (LH) or short-haired (SH), and has standard ears (Std) or non-standard, such as curled, ears (NStd).

The breeder may have already checked "Not for Breeding" and/or "Not for Showing", especially if this kitten was sold as a pet. It is also not uncommon for a breeder to hold off giving you this blue registration slip until you provide proof to the breeder that your kitten has been spayed if a female, or neutered if a male, IF the kitten was sold to you as a pet quality kitten. Remember, too, that the breeder may have reasons (such as serious congenital defects in the LINE, but not in this kitten) which you may not be aware of why this kitten should not be bred or shown if sold as a pet. PLEASE honor what your breeder has selected regarding whether or not your kitten should be bred or shown. When you have the blue registration slip all filled out, enclose it with a check for $10.00 and mail it to the address specified on the back of the form. In about two to four weeks, you will receive your kitten's formal registration paper, with his/her completed registered name and number, and with you listed as the owner.

Look Here!  WHAT DO THE REGISTRATION NUMBERS MEAN? Look Here!

The registration system through TICA provides each cat registered within its association a special registration number. This number contains pedigree and birth date information about the cat. The first three characters of the registration number gives the pedigree information. In order to be eligible for Championship competition in showing, the registration number of each individual cat must have the prefix "SBT".

What does "SBT" mean? SBT denotes Studbook status, and that the cat has a three generation pedigree (at least) of Bengal to Bengal breeding. What happens if the registration number sent back to you for your cat does NOT start with "SBT? If the first letter is "A", this indicates that the cat has a parent registered as another breed. If the first letter is "B", this indicates that the cat has at least one grandparent registered as another breed. If the first letter is "C", this indicates that the cat has a great-grandparent registered as another breed. If the first letter is "O", this indicates that the cat has an unregistered (or unknown) cat in it's pedigree.

The second character in the number further explains this pedigree information. If the second character is "1", this indicates that the cat has an unregistered (or, in the case of the Asian Leopard Cat, a non-domestic) parent. If the second character is "2", this indicates that the cat has at least one unregistered (or, in the case of the Asian Leopard Cat, a non-domestic) grandparent. If the second character is "3", this indicates that the cat has at least one unregistered (or, in the case of the Asian Leopard Cat, a non-domestic) great-grandparent. If the second character is "0", this indicates that the cat has no unregistered (or, in the case of the Asian Leopard Cat, a non-domestic) cats in his three generation pedigree, but has cats of OTHER registered breeds within the three generations.

If the third character of the registration number is "T", this indicates that all cats in the pedigree are of the accepted colors for that breed. If the third character of the registration number is "V", then there is at least one cat in the pedigree of a non-accepted color.

What does the term "F-1" or "F-5", etc. mean? Many times, you will hear reference to Bengals by a number following the letter F. This refers to the number of generations removed from the nearest Asian leopard cat in the Bengal's lineage or pedigree. An F-1, for example, has an Asian leopard cat for a parent; therefore, this Bengal is one generation away from the nearest ALC. F-1 through F-3 Bengals are often also referred to as "Filial/Foundation" Bengals, to differentiate them from F-4 and beyond, which are considered the true domestic purebred Bengals. Remember, an SBT Bengal must be at LEAST four or more generations from the nearest ALC, thus must be an F-4 or beyond.
