FOOTHILL FELINES SCARLETT!!
This adorable and very sweet female kitten born October 5, 2000 to Foothill Felines Melanie and RW TGC AlmaDen Hot Link was placed with a most special family in northern California, Chris and Mike S. Our first letter from Chris was: "I just wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about Melody...we are calling her that for a few days until we know her better. She had a safe uneventful trip home. She is a wonderful traveler! She is so calm and trusting. She has been exploring all of her new environment with a cautious attitude, but not an iota of fear. She's been purring pretty much non stop. She has seen the dogs, she is unimpressed! We're going to meet each one individually today. She is eating well and using her litter box. We are walking around the house so that she has gets "the lay of the land". Anyway, she is doing well and we are delighted. She is a treasure. Please thank Wesley again for making the drive yesterday. We so appreciated it. And thank you for helping us connect with Melody. She is fast becoming an integral part if our family."
The next letter continued: "Mike has started calling her SCARLETT! Did you tell us she plays fetch? She instigates the game and
then she wants to play until she's tired of it. The boys came home day
before yesterday and just are infatuated with her. Last night she had Jason playing with her and he was so tired and she kept insisting! It was so fun to watch. She's such a love. And by the way, she has conquered the dogs. She's not ready to be buddies yet, but coexistence is in place. Hope you have a wonderful holiday visit with
your mom and thanks for everything."
Unfortunately, and so tragically, right after the holidays, it was found that Mike had a very serious illness, and Chris, Mike, their children and animals, including Scarlett, went through several months of anguish and lots of pain for Mike while trying to conquer this illness. Chris wrote us again late February: "Dear Holly, Thank you so much for the advice and the moral support. I love Scarlett so much and so does Mike. She is laying on his bed with him right now and I know she is a comfort when she is just quiet and close by him. I appreciate
your suggestions and will keep you posted as to how we are doing. I
remember my Tigger, if I were ever sick would just attach himself to my
side in my bed and just be there for me....and it was exactly what I needed. I do think that there was a reason that Mike was so insistent about getting Scarlett before the holiday....we'll get through this time. Thank you again. With love,
Chris"
Early March: "Mike was in the hospital again for 5 days, we were just able to bring him home Tuesday. He had pneumonia and his platelets were critically low and he was bleeding internally. He has stabilized somewhat and is happy to be in his own home. What I wanted to let you
know is that Scarlett has just incredibly changed. She is mellow, playful but very gentle with Mike and we didn't do anything! She is
cuddling with him on his bed and isn't flying around the room as she was doing. She just seems to know how to be around him. She usually will let him pet her and however feisty she is with others, she tones it way down for him. She is not frightening him anymore and he keeps telling us how good she is being. He is getting pleasure from her warmth and companionship. I wanted to let you know."
Incredibly difficult times were not over for this very special family; Mike lost his valiant battle with lung cancer and passed away - so suddenly and so soon after finding out he was even ill at all. Chris wrote me bravely: "Dear Holly,
Just a short note to let you know that we lost Mike on March 20th. Scarlett and I are on our own now and she is keeping me very good company. She is definitely good entertainment. This has been a lot for her to handle too. The long periods that we were away; the high emotions when we were here; and the business of so many people here for Mike's services. She and I are settling into a routine now and getting along famously. I know that Mike meant for this to be........I will write later. Best wishes, Chris"
We stayed in touch off and on during the following months, and in September 2001, almost on Scarlett's birthday, Chris sent us the lovely photos of beautiful Scarlett, much to our delight of course. We cannot express enough to Chris our sympathy and condolences over her loss, and can only hope that Scarlett will continue to be a comfort and a connection to Mike for her for many, many years to come.
"Here are photos of my little Scarlett, who is not so little anymore. She does weigh in just under 10 lbs. She is a little photo shy but now I'm on a roll; have the digital
batteries charged up and will try to get some cute shots....She always helps me when I'm at my desk and she steals things from my
organizer....I find paper clips all over, pens, shells.....you name it. She takes things and hides them. I bead and that is the worst. I can't
leave my tray alone for a minute if she's awake. She steals the jewelry and even the beads. Then, I have to search the house to find
them. She hides things under cupboards, beds...all over. She has little piles of play stash. Fetch is one of her favorite games. She
loves the little crinkly foil balls and she decides when we play. She has even dropped one of those balls in my face in the middle of the
night! She really can crack me up. She loves water, gets in the shower with me, lies in the bathroom sink. She likes to drink her water out of the faucet!"
A few months later, we received some priceless update photos and note from Chris: " Hi Holly,
I just wanted to update you on the match made in heaven....they are still best buddies and so funny to be around. Today I went in and they were just all cuddled up sleeping on my bed...too cute. Of course, they don't sleep all that often. Much of the time is spent playing. They are quite the wrestlers. Then they chase each other around and skitter across the table, knocking off all in their way. They seemed to do fine while I was in Tahoe. And, prior to going to Tahoe I had an unexpected trip down south. Mike's mother passed away on Christmas Day and her services were the beginning of January. Since January 1st I have been home 3 nights and 2 days. I am so glad to be back and I am so glad that Scarlett and Rhett became such good friends so quickly. Rhett is growing by leaps and bounds and eats more than any other kitten I have ever seen. It is quite amazing. So, hope all is well with you. We are all getting along famously....."
