The Sri Lanka Leopard (sometimes referred to as the "Kotiya") is named for its native island home of Sri Lanka. For any conservation plan to be meaningful and effective, further research and study must be done to better understand this leopard. The Leopard Project under the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT) is working together closely with government officials from Sri Lanka to ensure this occurs. The Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society is also planning some intensive studies. The WWCT are currently working in the central hills of the island where the Sri Lanka leopard's habitat fragmentation is occurring at the most rapid rate and causing the most threat to these animals.
