FOOTHILL FELINES ELWOOD!!

Elwood headed off just before Christmas, 1998, to Canton, Ohio, to join the Konchar family. He also made the acquaintance of his new "older brother", Jake, the family's 2 year old Bengal. The Konchars were hoping the two boys would hit it off and become a team like "The Blues Brothers", and that each would be good company for the other. Here is their story:

Day 1 - "Hi Holly! Thanks for the encouragement and tips. Elwood is great, he already struts around like he owns the place and watching him go up and down the stairs is a hoot. He could be poster boy for the song, "If you're not with the one you love, love the one you're with"! He's a cuddler and a purrer. Jake is totally upset with me. He doesn't like this new arrangement. Elwood just bugs the heck out of him, bites his tail, etc. He wants Jake to play but Jake just stares and growls. He also looks so sad. My problem is that I'm female, Italian and catholic so I figure I have the guilt market cornered. I'll keep you updated and I'm sure in no time the news will be better. Kiss all the babies and tell them Elwood sends his love."

Day 2 - "Day 2 is off and running and I'm already whipped. Jake is still growling and hissing at Elwood but up till this morning the only physical thing has been an occasional bop to the head with a front paw. Today Jake is pinning Elwood down and biting softly on his neck. I break it up but Elwood immediately goes back for more. He is a persistent little guy! How much do I interfere? What is allowable and what should I put a stop to? Playing hasn't been helpful because Jake - who loves to play - refuses to join in." And, later that day, "Good advice. I just wanted to make sure that all the roughhousing was O.K.! I told them if they were going to continue to be mean and nasty I would have no choice but to ship them both off to a more appropriate place..........the House of Representatives!!"

Day 3 - "Yesterday was wild with the fighting, hissing and Jake looking so sad but the evening was a bit better. Although Jake didn't like it one bit he didn't do anything but watch intently as confident little Elwood strutted proudly through "his" house and proceeded to drink from Jake's water bowl, snack a bit on Jake's food and then curl up for a snooze in Jake's bed! They are both just little loves and Elwood is so affectionate and talkative. Now that I know that their behavior is normal and they aren't really killing each other I can relax a bit and enjoy them fully. Elwood dozed on my lap for over an hour last night and made the cutest squeaky sounds in his sleep."

And, about one week later - "Dear Holly, Wes, and the gang: We hope your Christmas in Los Angeles went well. My computer time has been restricted since most of my time, recently, has been spent refereeing or keeping Elwood out of the fireplace and Christmas tree! He is so fast. I have good news to report. Earlier in the week my boys were still going at it pretty well but the hissing and growling disappeared. Yesterday, they were still wrestling and when Elwood curled up in Jake's bed to take a nap Jake seemed really sad and went into the other room to curl up on the couch and sulk and sleep. When Jake had been asleep for a while I took Elwood in and sat next to Jake. Elwood jumped off my lap and went over to Jake and TA DA! Jake proceeded to groom Elwood and they slept together for almost 3 hours. Of course, while Jake was bathing Elwood he seemed a bit confused as to why this little guy was rooting around for a nipple! I had so much fun watching them."

"I think they would have been buddies sooner if Christmas hadn't interfered. We snuck Elwood out to Jerry's parents on Christmas Eve and I don't think Jake bought into the coincidence that Elwood didn't make a sound all night until 2 or 3 minutes after we arrived at home. Elwood checked out fine at the vet's and he will be getting his third vaccination on the 8th of January. He is a curious, playful little bundle of joy and he talks all the time. Even when he is sleeping or eating. And what an appetite. Please tell all the others that Elwood saw snow on Tuesday and today he sat and watched as huge flakes floated by the window. We have already enjoyed more lap and cuddle time with him than with Jake!"

"We are going out to grab a quick supper and then we will be home to celebrate 2 events with our boys. At midnight it will be the new year and Jake's second birthday. Thanks for getting us through this- it seems to have turned out exactly as you predicted. Happy new year, Mary , Jerry, Marc, Jake and Elwood"

Below, are photos of Elwood and Jake, in the first 2 months of Elwood's arrival. Captions are by Mary, who also tells us that Jerry took Elwood to work for a few hours recently, where he was a big hit!! Jakes goes about once a month, too, as "everyone has to work to earn their litter and food!" Elwood even seems to enjoy riding in the car!!
