THREATS TO SURVIVAL:

The natural enemies of the serval are hyenas, African wild dogs and leopards. Humans are also a serious threat to the serval because of this cat's beautiful spotted coats, making them a prime target for poachers. Serval skins are often sold as young leopard or cheetah skins, which are much rarer and bring more money. To make of a coat from small wild cats, it requires a very large number of skins because of the intricate process of matching spots, stripes and bars. 13 adult servals must be killed to make one fur coat. The pelt trade at this point in time appears largely to be supported by domestic ceremonial, medicinal purposes or the tourist trade, rather than for commercial export.

There is also the issue of preserving the land that makes up the servals' homeland, which is constantly being destroyed by human encroachment or from the annual burning of grasslands. Wetland conservation is the most important key to serval conservation. Wetlands contain comparatively high rodent populations versus other habitat types, and form the core areas of serval home ranges. Some African tribes still hunt and kill the serval for their flesh, which is considered a delicacy.
